The best thing about Finn Bonel’s debut single is that the focus is on the violin, viola and cello rather than guitar. This gives it a crisp, defining sound- which gives the song a lot of similarity to some Elbow tracks.
But as the bands named after the man himself Finn Bonel, the spotlight is actually on Finns singing. With a voice that mothers up and down the country will be idolizing over!
Finn himself portrays a lot of pure emotion through his lyrics. On the subject of his influences such as bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, he says “The poeticness of those American songs really struck me, I want to purvey that same emotive energy…striving to make beautiful music that really moves people”
And Bonel truly does create some beautiful music with this song. And considering it’s his first single, it is bound be followed by a brilliant album.
The ladies will probably be swooning over Mr Bonel in a few months!
Caucasian female rappers have been slowly but surely chipping away at the male, black hegemony of hip-hop. Some of the efforts may be, well, laughable, but some of these women are making some irrefutable headway. Avoiding the “hardcore” or “sexualized” paths of her compatriots, San Francisco’s K.Flay has a decidedly more indie approach. In fact, our first introduction to the West coast flowesta featured a sampling from The xx.
This month, K.Flay returns with a new album, Eyes Shut, and you can hear the track titled “Sunburn” below. Don’t be fooled by what sounds like a few bars of standard-fare intro. When K.Flay drops in with her impressive and swift flow, you’ll know you aren’t listening to anything standard. Lyrics range from witty (“Jack-in-the-mutha-fuckin’-box/I got quarter pounder distention”) to personally revealing (“My father looks down on me and says ‘What a crying shame’/ incompetently navigating treacherous terrain”) in a song of introspective and contemplative musings. Oh, and her vocals in the chorus are killer. Check it out for yourself below.
